What Makes This a Restricted License?

A typical Class A license is known as a tractor-trailer semi using a fifth-wheel coupling system. This license uses a pintle hook coupling system. (Pintle Hook & Ring) But it still allows you to pull a pintle hook trailer that weights more than 10,000 pounds. However, you cannot drive a tractor-trailer combination, you have a restriction on your license. That letter will be an O (The driver cannot operate a class A vehicle with a fifth-wheel connection.)

Example: Dump Truck pulling a trailer weighing more than 10,001 pounds GVWR.

  • Class A Restricted CDL allows the driver to operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,001 pounds.
  • Class A Restricted CDL allows the driver to operate vehicles with a towed unit that has a GVWR of more than 10,001 pounds using a pintle hook coupling system only.
  • Class A Restricted CDL allows the driver to operate Class B and C class vehicles.
